Some dealerships say never since it is a sealed unit, others say every 100,000 miles, and still others say every 50,000 miles. Recently I learned that it needs a new waist gate valve on the turbo As a good rule of thumb 4 years 60,000 miles is an ideal time for filter service life. 4 years insures that you retain a 150% margin on embrittlement of the cellulose fibers and insures you don't get any cracking of the elements filter media.I doubt very much that VW would set the service interval to be anywhere more than 70% of the average lifespan in their own testing, and is much more likely to be closer to 50% given the high mileage numbers they're dealing with (there's a lot of variation in the amount of abuse that happens in 10 years/130k miles).
