Jun 14, 2015. #10. Hi gents re fuel consumption on 2001 discovery 2 td5 manual. Ive been monitering the mpg and keep coming up with 35+per gallon. check this week came up with 663 miles/fuel in 82.2ltr to refill =36.4 mpg approx. 60 % / 40 % - m/way--urban.

Car diesel engines are getting 220bhp+ from 2.2 litres, but they are totally different animals to the TD5 and probably undriveable in a 2.2tonne lump like the Discovery. I looked at the TD5 when we bought our V8, and even then (2009) it was effectively out of production with little in the way of third party support, so a bit of a dead-end.
Driving and noise level wise the TD5 is far superior and the turning circle is better. It does suffer from the same old problems of leaky sunroofs, clogged up EGR valves, and the fuel consumption is not as good as the 300tdi, well mine isnt. but I am still driving it in sport mode a lot of the time.
